A mix of historical fact and artistic invention, "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" uses the story of America’s brutal and bloody seventh president to investigate the attraction and terrors of populism, using a blend of outrageous comedy, anarchic theatricality and emo rock. A.J. kicked British butt, shafted the Native Americans and smacked down the Spaniards, all in the name of these United States — who cares if he didn’t have permission? "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" creators, Michael Friedman ("Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Fortress of Solitude") and Alex Timbers ("Love’s Labour’s Lost, Peter and the Starcatcher"), cook up an alternate universe (and draw parallels to today’s political/populist landscape) with their musical about the seventh U.S. president. "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" asks the question: is wanting to have a beer with someone reason enough to elect them? What if they’re a genocidal maniac? What if they’re really, really hot? [less-]

Start with Edgar Allan Poe -- the beloved master of poetry, short stories, and tales of mystery and the macabre. Dissect and remix. With a departure from Japanese Noh drama and Kyogen satire, mix with Theatre of Yugen's signature physicality, voices, words, ideas, bodies, and puppets. Stir in a splash of contemporary relevance, with good old-fashioned irreverence. Bake at a macabre 666 degree heat for an hour and a half. Devised Defiance is a dish best served cold. Poe’s macabre imagery is legendary because it combines his two most prominent themes: love and death. Along with the theme of loneliness, Poe evokes universal human experiences. Theatre of Yugen has combed through literally all of Poe’s writings, from his poems and short stories, to random newspaper articles, and extracted and assembled the works we most wish to explore. Edgar Allan Poe favorite Poems and Stories presented include: "The Bells," "Telltale Heart," "Annabelle Lee," "The Raven," "Fall of the House of Usher" and more. Featuring: Ella Cooley, Alan Coyne, Shannon R. Davis, Steven Flores, Nick Ishimaru and Jamin Jollo. [less-]

Book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman Music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak Gallows humor at its best, this musical comedy convulsed Broadway in 2014, winning four Tonys, including Best Musical and Best Book. Based on the 1907 novel "The Autobiography of a Criminal", by Roy Horniman, "A Gentleman's Guide" tells the tale of impoverished Monty, who learns at his dying mother's bedside that, far from being a street urchin, he is ninth in line to be the "Earl of Highhurst", with all the wealth and power that entails. Well, that's a lot of people to eliminate -- but he will give it his best. And that's just Act One. When the show debuted, the "New York Times" called it "ingenious" and "among the most inspired and entertaining new musicals." [less-]
