One Fermented Evening at The Blackhawk Grille

For many locals in East Danville, the Blackhawk Grille is a favorite place to go with its gorgeous outdoor dining options, friendly and always-exciting bar area, and of course, their main dining area with the exposed kitchen. Tonight’s affair, however, was held in the private backroom as a coming out party for Blackhawk Grille’s newly appointed Executive Chef, Devon Boisen as he reboots his award-winning event, One Fermented Evening.
Act 1 – The Starter: Alaskan Halibut & Ruby Red Grapefruit Salad
This gorgeous and colorful plate included Sausalito spring cress, Hass avocado, goddess sabayon, Amphora Nueva, and Australian hojiblanca paired with a nice glass of bubbly from Veuve Clicquot, Yellow Label.
The choice of herbs and the delicious olive oil (Australian hojiblanca) perfectly paired with the bubbly and helped elevate the fresh and mild Halibut steak. Another component of this dish that added to the experience but didn’t take the show was the grapefruit. While it was citrus and sweet, it was somehow understated with all the other elements in the dish.
Act 2 – The Mains: British Colombia Salmon Belly & Pementon Seared Wagyu Strip Steak
Black garlic rillettes, crispy house pickles served on grilled toast spears and paired with a 2016 La Crema, Pinot Gris, Monterey.
The rillettes of garlic and salmon belly were very creamy and finished well with the La Crema and the house-made pickles helped cut through the fatness of the dish while providing another texture layer.
The star of the night was definitely this A6 Wagyu steak. Served with Brentwood fava leaf picada, blistered Padron chili peppers, and a saffron alioli and paired with a 2016 Rombauer Chardonnay from Carneros. Everything about this dish was amazing. The steak was super-tender and held up with a nice crust from the sear. The saffron alioli was lite and a perfect match with the Padron peppers. The real surprise here was the wine pairing. Normally you would have a nice red wine with a high-end steak, however, with the grade of this cut (Wagyu A6), it would have been too overpowering, even for a vintage. The Rombauer held up nicely and complimented this dish very well.
Act 3 – Dessert: Seville Orange & Tunisian Baklouti XVO Cake
Finishing off the night of food & wine at this event was a deliciously wet style cake made with vanilla beans, Caribbean rum caramel, housemade white chocolate ice cream and paired with a 2013 Justin, Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles.
Again, Chef Devon took people out of their comfort zone by pairing the dessert with a bold red wine. The choice actually worked! The cake was rich and the white chocolate ice cream complimented the cake and the wine bringing the whole dish together.
Summary
The coming out party for Chef Devon and the reboot of his award-winning, One Fermented Evening event was a success. The private room was at capacity and everyone had a great time enjoying good food with other foodies that have been begging for an event like this in Danville.

Help Danville Police Support Special Olympics at Chipotle
One of the groups that the Danville Police Department supports is Special Olympics. They participate in the Torch Run each year, as well as the Polar Plunge and other events. Tonight, Chipotle Mexican Grill has agreed to donate a portion of their proceeds to Special Olympics.
Between 4-8pm tonight, come to the Chipotle at 33 Railroad Avenue. Bring in the flyer (picture on this post), show it on your mobile device, or simply let the cashier know that you are supporting Special Olympics, and they will donate 33% of the proceeds to Special Olympics.

California Avocado Recall
If you haven’t heard yet there’s a recall on all California avocados from Bravocado. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe.
A major avocado producer announced a voluntary recall due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes.
California-based Henry Avocado Corp. says it has taken this step out of “an abundance of caution” based on positive test results on environmental samples taken during a routine government inspection. The company claims there are no reported illnesses associated with the recall.
Youth Citizens Police Academy!
School Resource Officers are already accepting applications for this summer’s Youth Citizens Police Academy. The academy is for youth grades 9-12.
The academy will be held from June 10-13, 2019. Classes are held from 9 am – 2 pm, with training topics that include Traffic Stops, K9 demos, Search and Seizure laws, Officer Safety, Defensive Tactics, Building Searches and more.

SRVUSD & SRVEA Negotiations Update
The San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) Board of Education and the San Ramon Valley Education Association (SRVEA) are pleased to announce that representatives of the two parties met Monday evening, March 4, 2019, at which time they discussed and developed a framework to get back to the negotiations table. SRVUSD and SRVEA are mutually hopeful that the parties will reach a tentative agreement during the scheduled negotiations session on Wednesday, March 6, 2019.
“I am hopeful about this current development in the negotiations’ process. We are discussing incredible enhancements that will provide the best education for our students. I appreciate working collaboratively in partnership to create educational experiences and opportunities where our students can excel and recognizing our professional educators’ role in providing a stellar education for all of our students in the San Ramon Valley,” SRVEA President Ann Katzburg said.
“We are very pleased with the progress made this week through heartfelt conversations with SRVEA leadership,” SRVUSD Superintendent Rick Schmitt said. “The conversations that have occurred exemplify how this community consistently comes together in support of students and staff. We are grateful to both teams for focusing on identifying common goals and finding creative solutions to support our students, staff, parents, and community.”
Once a tentative agreement is reached, SRVUSD and SRVEA will release a joint statement to the public.

Suspect in Shooting Death on Fostoria Way Found Dead
Murder Suspect Mark Allan Sypien Dead Suspect found in Illinois suburb dead of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound The three-day search for a Dublin man suspected in the shooting death of a Danville resident has ended with the suspect found dead in an Illinois suburb.
Detectives from the Danville Police Department and the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff this afternoon received notification from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois that 51-year old Mark Allan Sypien was found dead after apparently killing himself near his parents’ home in St Charles, Illinois. Sypien was being sought in connection with the killing of Danville resident John Moore. The shooting occurred Sunday, February 24, 2019, at about 2:25 p.m.
Danville officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of Fostoria Way for a report of gunshots. Officers arrived finding Moore suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators identified Sypien as the suspect in the killing, and an arrest warrant for murder was issued.
Detectives continue to work with their counterparts in Illinois on the case. “While we regret the further loss of life, we are pleased that we were able to resolve the case,” said Police Chief Allan Shields. “We are very grateful for the collaboration and assistance of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in investigating this crime and bringing closure to the family and friends of Mr. Moore.”
